Personal:

I'm a Brit living in a small town in the south west of Germany, on the edge of a nature park, the Schwäbisch-Fränkischer Wald. The landscape is very hilly with vineyards & orchards on the lower slopes merging into forest above. 42 years young, married since 1997 to my lovely wife.

A.M. Workout race on an up and down hill course.  Herwelzer Gaenslauf 10k. Gaens means goose and I didn't manage to find out the connection between the town and the bird. Very warm day and 10am in the summer is a late start. I went to the car after the race which was parked in the shade and the temp guage was measuring 29,5°C/85°F. No watch and my aim was just to go work as hard as I could throughout. Very steep, long and stony hill climb starting at km3 knocked the wind out of my sails, after this my will power was there to push hard but my legs were not responding as well as they should. We were strung out and the positions were settled early in the race. I crossed the line and went straight to the fireman to get hosed down with cold water - that was wonderful. Johanne had counted me in 10th so with a 10yr band on the AK there was no point hanging about. Found my result this morning. Time 39:58, Overall 10th/294, M40 4th/78. It was ok.

A.M. Pretty warm this morning, no freshness. The day temp is predicted to be over 30°C all this week. Recovery trail run - very slow first 5k,back of my thigh was intially sore and painful but gradually felt better. Total 20,3k in 1:48:20, av pace 5:20/k, 8:35/mi.

A.M. Very warm and sunny, sweated lots, I weighed myself before and after, lost 3kg during the run. I struggled today, my legs felt weak and tired, my right thigh constantly aching. Enough whinging. Workout was: 29k easy, 6k at nearly M.P. (didn't hit it, 5s/k short), 1,5k jog. Total 36,5k in 2:58:46, av pace 4:53/k, 7:52/mi.

A.M. Rec run, r thigh stiff and painful, slow short run. 12,1k in 1:05:17, av pace 5:24/k, 8:41/mi.

P.M. 32°C and humid. Again a short slow run in the woods. 11k in 57:04, 5:11/k, 8:21/mi.

A.M. Wet and soft underfoot after thunder storms in the night, but still very warm and humid. Workout was 5k easy, 15k M.P. in 1:03:16, 6,5k easy to finish. Went easier than expected after blitzing my thigh last night with stretching, pilates, heat pads and massage. Total 26,5k in 1:58:20, av pace 4:28/k, 7:11/mi.

A.M. 23°C/73°F before sun rise this morning. Easy pace trail run with a couple of hill climbs. 8 x 100m strides to finish. Total 17,4k in 1:24:35, av pace 4:52/k, 7:49/mi.

P.M. Short evening run at slow pace up and down the nearest hill overlooking the town. Total 6,8k in 37:43, av pace 5:33/k, 8:56/mi.

A.M. Workout this morning was 3k warmup, 4 x 2k w/1600m rec, 3k cooldown. Target range 7:28-7:40. Splits: 7:35,  7:37,  7:31,  7:28. Annoyed with myself after the 2nd 2k, I felt I was holding back, then much happier with the effort on the last 2. Total 18,8k in 1:24:01, av pace 4:28/k, 7:12/mi.
